The International Biennale of Graphic Design Brno, Czech Republic

The Brno Biennale
is the oldest permanent international cyclic exhibition of the graphic design in the World.

The Brno Biennale has been founded by a graphic designer, Jan Rajlich Sr., in 1963. He was taking the Presidency of the Biennale in 1964–1992. In 1991, he has founded the Brno Biennale Association, and was the President of until 1998 (since 1999 he has been the Honorary President of the Brno Biennale Association). In 1993–1998 his son, also a graphic designer Jan Rajlich Jr., was taking the Presidency of the Organisation Committee for three Brno Biennale exhibitions, and since 1999 he has been the President of the Brno Biennale Association. In 1999–2010 Aleš Najbrt was taking the Presidency of the Biennale exhibition.

The Brno Biennale is organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and by the Moravian Gallery in Brno; former it was organised in collaboration with the Brno Biennale Association, the City of Brno, the Design Centre of the Czech Republic and the Union of Visual Artists of the Czech Republic.

The Brno Biennale has been endorsed by Icograda (International Council of Graphic Design Associations), and it is a member of IBCC (International Biennales Co-ordinating Committee).

The Brno Biennale changed regularly two principal alternating themes:
1. Poster, and corporate, information and advertising design (2006, 2010, etc.)
2. Book, editorial and screen design, illustration and typography, and typeface (2004, 2008, etc).

However, organisers of the 25th Brno Biennale in 2012 have refused this scheme, and no categories were announced.

The Brno Biennale exhibition participation is open to all artists/designers. Those interested in taking part in the Brno Biennale can apply for the entry forms by organisers or print them from a website. The dead line is usually 15 January (each even year). Submitted works are selected for the exhibition by a pre-selection committee, than the works on display are judged by the International Jury, which confers the Grand Prix, prizes (in the respective categories, if any) and special awards.

The Brno Biennale publishes a comprehensive catalogue for each Biennale, which contains short biographies of selected artists and reproduction of one of their works.

The Brno Biennale organises simultaneously with the main competitive exhibition, other accompanying exhibitions, an international symposium, national days etc.

The Brno Biennale Association is the owner of the registered trade mark “Bienále Brno” (Brno Biennale)
